TV Advertisement Evaluation

The Brief

In this project, we had to create a television advert for one of Unilever's products. "Unilever is an Anglo–Dutch multinational consumer goods company. Its products include foods, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products. It is the world's third-largest consumer goods company measured by 2011 revenues and the world's largest maker of ice cream" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unilever)
After we were put into groups, we had to Present our ideas for the adverts with the products that we chose. I was the person to put forward our idea that we carried forward which was Hellman's Mayonnaise. We decided to choose it because it was a easy product to re market as the target audience seemed to not be directed at the right people. The adverts we looked at seemed to promote mayonnaise as a cooking product instead of a condiment which is what we wanted to advertise it for.

The Finished Product and Feedback
We collected most of our feedback by sessions in class but that only gave us feedback for the age range of 18 to 25 where we also want to advertise to people who are mothers and fathers.
We solved this problem by putting a questionnaire online and send it to older people that we knew.
The main comments all said that the advert was well made and they enjoyed it.
Our product was apporpiate to our Target audience. we wanted to show that we they could use helmans mayonnaise as a condiment for anything they wanted. On the advert, you could see people physicaly putting mayo on their food and so it would give the audience they idea that they can do it to. It sounds very childish but that is what people need it. You more likely to do something if you see someone else doing it first.
Our mise-en-scene was pretty much perfect. Jack's House was a real family home and exactly what we needed for the mayo setting. The location Reece went so well that we didn't actually need to add anything to our set that wasn't already there. We had trouble with our editing at the beginning, our locaton was to far away for us to do a re shoot and we had some continuity errors. This meant that we had to really bend the footage that we had. We made what could of been at 45 second advert and we pushed it down to 20 seconds. This didn't really matter to much as everything looked very professional and fun to watch. We decided to cut all the sound out and have jack do a voice over. It worked well because one thing didn't distract your from the next.
Our storyline was a family sitting down with a meal which could do with a top up. The father then goes to the fridge, grabs a large jar of Hellman's mayo and puts it on the table. The family puts the mayo into their food and tucks in to a enjoyable mayo filled dinner. The content was effect because it put out  our main points. That mayonnaise is condiments for food, not for cooking with, and that mayonnaise is a family friendly product that is good value and enjoyable.
Looking at the BCAP code, there isn't really much we could of broken. We have kept within all the regualtions with food and using food in adverts. Also using the word Ketchup, we managed to not use anyone Else's product in our advert. Although we didn't have problems, another group did a clip of someone being thrown to the ground. This conflict the code as it states "Advertisements must not include material that is likely to condone or encouragebehaviour that prejudices health or safety."

Personal Reflection
Our original intentions was actually really stupid come to think of it. When i preposed the mayo idea , i came up with a advert with a large man with a deep voice shouting "YOU CAN PUT MAYO ON ANYTHING" before listing all the foods you can put it on, including some stupid ones. I am really gald we decided against this as the advert we did looks profesional and like it could really go on ITV after Come Dine With Me. When we did our pre-production after choosing the advert idea we are doing now, we added a lot of scenes that we couldn't use because of continuity errors. I don't thin it really mattered beacause we still eneded up with a quick, interesting, fun to watch advert.
I think i could of done more with the project. I did more in pre-production and the paper work as i wasn't able to be in to much of the filming as i had other priorities. As for the editing, because i wasn't their for the filming, i didn't really know what shots we did and what they dicieded to change on the day. I have learnt that I need to be there for EVERY part of the prosess, otherwise i will be to far behind everyone else.

  1. Alex,

This is rather lacking in detail and does not provide specific examples which are required for the higher grades.

As it is, you have scraped P4.
